The New Wellness Trend: Rage Rituals?

Updated: Jul 8

The wellness industry is continually evolving, with new trends emerging to address the myriad ways people seek to improve their mental and physical health. One of the latest and most striking trends among women on TikTok is the practice of “rage rituals.” This unconventional wellness ritual involves participants venting their pent-up anger through primal screams and physical activities like smashing objects and beating sticks on the forest floor.

What do Rage Rituals entail?

Rage rituals are a form of stress relief where participants are encouraged to express their anger in a controlled, safe environment. These rituals are often conducted in secluded forest areas, far from residential zones, allowing participants to fully immerse themselves in their emotions without fear of judgment or disturbance. The activities typically include screaming at the top of their lungs, smashing items, and pounding sticks against the ground.

The Appeal of Rage Rituals

The concept of rage rituals taps into a deep-seated need for many women to express emotions that are often suppressed in daily life. By providing a structured outlet for anger, these rituals can be profoundly cathartic. The trend has gained significant traction online, with many women sharing their experiences on platforms like TikTok and Instagram. This viral popularity has translated into a demand for in-person experiences, with some wellness retreats now offering rage rituals as part of their programs.

At the Forefront: Mia Magik

Mia Magik, a self-described “Spiritual Fairy Godmother,” has been at the forefront of this trend. For years, she has been leading rage rituals in the serene landscapes of Scotland. Initially a personal practice for herself and her friends, Mia recognized the broader appeal and therapeutic potential of these rituals. She integrated them into her wellness retreats, which range from days-long excursions costing between $2,000 to $4,000, to more accessible one-day sessions priced at $222 per ticket.

Another prominent influencer, Sky Life on Youtube, also known as @skycowans on Instagram, recently shared a captivating video detailing her experience with a rage ritual at a sacred volcano in Bali. The video, which has garnered over 4 million views, elicited a diverse range of reactions. While some viewers were intrigued by the ritual, many comments criticized Sky and her group for not adequately appreciating the local culture and respecting the sacredness of the site.

The Therapeutic Benefits

Participants in rage rituals often report feeling a significant emotional release. The act of physically and vocally expressing anger can help alleviate stress and provide a sense of empowerment. The setting—typically a remote forest—enhances the experience, offering a natural and calming backdrop that contrasts with the intensity of the activities.

The Hidden Dangers of Anger: Why Rage Rituals Might Be Harmful

While rage rituals have become a trendy new wellness practice among women on social media, particularly on TikTok and Instagram, there are significant concerns about the potential dangers of embracing anger in such an intense manner. Anger, a powerful and often destructive emotion, can have serious implications for both physical and mental health. Here, we explore the ways in which frequent and intense anger can impact well-being and why it’s crucial to approach such trends with caution.

Understanding Anger’s Impact on Health

Anger is part of the body’s natural fight-or-flight response, which involves the release of stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol. Dr. Tafrate, a clinical psychologist and leading criminology expert, explains that while this response can prepare the body to deal with immediate threats, chronic activation of these stress hormones can lead to severe health issues. Here are five ways anger can adversely affect your health:

1. Anger Stresses Out the Heart

Experiencing anger triggers the release of stress hormones that can put a significant strain on the heart. Research has shown that even momentary anger can cause changes in heart function, leading to high blood pressure and an increased risk of heart disease, heart attacks, strokes, and metabolic syndrome. Individuals with higher levels of anger are more likely to perceive situations as hostile, which can increase their risk of coronary heart disease and related complications.

Rachel Lampert, MD, from Yale Medicine, notes that people with arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats) are more likely to experience episodes during times of anger or stress. The adrenaline surge that accompanies anger can cause electrical changes in the heart, further complicating heart health.

2. Anger Increases Risk of Heart Attacks

There is substantial evidence linking anger to an increased risk of heart attacks. A systematic review involving nearly four thousand participants found that the risk of a heart attack more than doubled within two hours of an anger outburst. The intensity of the anger further increases this risk, highlighting the severe impact anger can have on heart health.

3. Anger Can Disrupt Digestion

The brain and gut are closely connected, and stress can significantly affect digestion. According to Dr. Pankaj Jay Pasricha of the Mayo Clinic, anger and stress can disrupt the autonomic nervous system, which regulates digestion. This disruption can lead to gastrointestinal issues such as abdominal pain, stomach upset, and diarrhea. Over time, chronic stress and anger can contribute to the development of conditions like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

4. Anger Hinders Mental Health

Frequent anger can take a significant toll on mental health. It is often linked to emotional disorders such as anxiety and depression, and it can exacerbate symptoms and reduce the effectiveness of treatments. Anger can impair concentration, foster negative thinking patterns, and damage relationships. This can lead to increased hostility, social isolation, and a diminished quality of life.

5. Anger Disrupts Sleep

Individuals who struggle with anger often experience sleep disturbances. Studies have shown a strong correlation between higher levels of anger and issues with initiating and maintaining sleep. Anger increases psychological arousal and mental unrest, making it difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep, which can further impact overall health and well-being.

A Mindful Approach to Anger

While rage rituals offer a unique way to express anger, it’s essential to balance these practices with mindful approaches to managing emotions. Suppressing anger isn’t healthy, but neither is allowing it to dominate your life. Mindfulness and compassionate communication can help process these intense emotions without the negative health impacts.

Thich Nhat Hanh, a renowned Buddhist monk, teaches that understanding and compassion are the antidotes to anger. By expressing anger through “loving speech” and mindfulness, we can transform it into a force for positive change rather than destruction.

Rage rituals may provide temporary relief, but they also carry the risk of reinforcing unhealthy expressions of anger. It’s vital to approach this trend with caution and to be aware of the long-term effects of chronic anger on health. By incorporating mindfulness and compassion into our emotional practices, we can find healthier ways to manage anger and improve overall well-being.

For those interested in exploring more balanced approaches to emotional health, consider retreats that focus on mindfulness and compassion-based practices. Understanding and addressing the root causes of anger can lead to true healing and lasting peace.

Mindful Communication: Using Loving Speech to Transform Anger

Anger is a powerful emotion that, when left unchecked, can cause significant harm to ourselves and others. However, suppressing anger is not the answer. Instead, embracing the principles of mindful communication, particularly through the use of “loving speech,” can help us address anger constructively. This approach, deeply rooted in Buddhist teachings, offers a path to understanding and transforming our emotions.

The Importance of Expressing Anger Mindfully

Using the energy of mindfulness to deal with our anger doesn’t mean avoiding confrontation or hiding our feelings. On the contrary, it involves openly communicating our anger and suffering to the person who caused it, but doing so with compassion and understanding. Thich Nhat Hanh, affectionately known as Thay, emphasizes that “anger can never remove anger; anger can only promote more anger.” This is why it is crucial to approach our anger with mindfulness and loving speech.

The Concept of Loving Speech

Loving speech involves expressing our feelings honestly without blame or judgment. It requires us to communicate our suffering in a way that fosters understanding and healing rather than escalating conflict. Here’s how to practice loving speech when dealing with anger:

1. Pause and Reflect: Before reacting in anger, take a moment to breathe and calm your mind. This pause helps prevent impulsive reactions that could escalate the situation.

2. Acknowledge Your Feelings: Recognize and accept your anger. Understand that it is a natural emotion, but it needs to be expressed mindfully.

3. Communicate Clearly and Kindly: When you speak to the person who has caused your anger, use “I” statements to express how you feel. For example, “I feel hurt when…” instead of “You always…” This approach reduces defensiveness and opens the door to constructive dialogue.

4. Focus on Understanding: Listen to the other person’s perspective without interrupting. Understanding their viewpoint can often reduce your anger and help find common ground.

5. Seek Resolution, Not Revenge: Aim for a resolution that acknowledges both your feelings and the other person’s perspective. This collaborative approach fosters mutual respect and healing.

Buddhist Teachings on Anger

In Buddhist teachings, anger is seen as a destructive force that can only be transformed through understanding and compassion. Thay teaches that acting out of anger only brings more suffering. He advises that when we are really angry, it is best to refrain from acting or speaking immediately. Instead, we should focus on communicating our suffering rather than using anger to assert our position.

The Power of Understanding and Compassion

Understanding and compassion are the antidotes to anger. When we approach anger with a desire to understand its root causes, we can transform it into a positive force. This transformation not only heals ourselves but also those affected by our anger. Thay reminds us that “anger can never remove anger. Only understanding and compassion can put down the flame of anger in us and in the other person.”

Practical Steps to Embrace Mindful Anger Management

1. Meditation and Mindfulness Practices: Engage in regular meditation to cultivate mindfulness. This practice helps you become more aware of your emotions and better equipped to handle them calmly.

2. Emotional Check-ins: Regularly check in with your emotions. Acknowledge when you are feeling angry and take steps to address it mindfully before it escalates.

3. Seek Support: Consider joining a mindfulness or meditation group. Sharing experiences and learning from others can provide valuable insights and support.
