The Rise of Conscious Consumers: Why Alo Yoga Is Losing Its Appeal

Writer: Ashlee SunshineAshlee Sunshine

Lately, I’ve noticed a powerful shift happening in the yoga community and the conscious collective. More and more yogis are saying goodbye to fast fashion brands like Alo Yoga and Lululemon and looking for more sustainable, natural alternatives. And I totally get it. As a yoga teacher, wellness advocate, and conscious consumer, I’ve seen firsthand how our buying choices impact not just the planet but also our personal well-being.

We’re entering an era where people are more mindful of what they put in and on their bodies. The rise of conscious consumerism means that more of us are questioning what our clothes are made of, how they are produced, and whether they align with our values. Sustainable brands are gaining momentum as people prioritize health, sustainability, and ethical production over fast fashion’s cheap, synthetic materials and exploitative labor practices.

Why Yogis Are Ditching Fast Fashion

For a long time, big-name activewear brands dominated the market, offering stylish leggings and sportswear made almost entirely of synthetic fabrics like polyester and spandex. These materials might seem comfortable at first, but they come with hidden risks. Studies have shown that synthetic fabrics can contribute to skin irritation, hormone disruption, and even bacterial infections because they trap heat and moisture against the skin. For women, in particular, this can increase the risk of yeast infections and other health issues.

which may cause inflammation over time. Another study from the Environmental Science & Technology Journal highlights how synthetic fabrics shed microfibers with every wash, contributing to ocean pollution and harming marine life.

Yogis are increasingly aware of these risks and are looking for better alternatives that allow them to move freely while staying aligned with their values. That’s where natural fabrics come in.

How My Journey Led to NATURRE

My own transition to conscious fashion started during my trip to Nepal, where I spent time studying meditation with Buddhist monks. It was a transformative experience that made me rethink every aspect of my lifestyle, including the clothes I wore every day. I realized that, while I had been so focused on eating clean and living holistically, I was still wearing toxic, synthetic clothing that was out of alignment with my values.

When I returned home, I searched for stylish and functional natural-fabric activewear—but I couldn’t find anything that truly spoke to me. That’s when I knew I had to create something different. That’s how NATURRE was born—a conscious fashion boutique dedicated to providing eco-friendly, high-quality activewear for women who want to feel good inside and out.

Why We Started With Cotton Leggings

At NATURRE, we’re starting with one essential piece: cotton leggings. Leggings are a staple for yogis, but most mainstream brands make them with synthetic blends that can trap heat, cause irritation, and contribute to environmental waste. I wanted to change that by offering leggings made from 95% cotton with just 5% elastane for stretch—so they’re breathable, toxin-free, and comfortable for all-day wear.

These leggings aren’t just good for your body—they’re good for the planet. Unlike polyester, cotton is biodegradable and doesn’t shed harmful microfibers into the ocean every time you wash your clothes. It’s a simple switch, but one that can make a huge difference in both personal wellness and environmental impact.

The Future of Conscious Fashion in Yoga

As more people become aware of the dangers of fast fashion, the demand for sustainable, natural clothing is growing. The yoga community, in particular, is leading the charge, embracing eco-friendly brands that align with the principles of mindfulness, balance, and sustainability.

I truly believe that fashion should be a reflection of our values. By making more conscious choices about what we wear, we’re not just protecting our own health—we’re also taking a stand for the planet. NATURRE is just the beginning of this journey, and I can’t wait to see more yogis making the switch to clothing that’s as kind to the earth as it is to their bodies.
